WRS celebrates Sports Day after 2-year hiatus

1 July – The month of July started with a bang with our annual Sports Day being held after a two-year hiatus. Due to the need to adhere to Safe Management Measures, our graduating cohort were given the privilege to be in full attendance for the event.

They were all decked out in their purple Class T-shirts and class flags, ready to cheer their class representatives on for the respective events.

Secondary 3 participants were also in attendance. While smaller in size, they were no less wavering in spirit and filled the stadium with their cheering. Back home, their peers engaged in another form of Sports Experience during a virtual learning package on Student Learning Space.A special visitor graced the event, spreading much cheer and laughter to spectators with its antics.

Among the highlights of the event were the CCA and Staff Race which brought the entire school together.

National Servicemen (NSF) Engagement

8 July – The future of defense technology was here at WRS through the Full-time National Servicemen (NSF) Engagement Programme, which aims to help students understand the importance of National Service to Singapore.

We had the privilege of welcoming back our former student Mr. Tan Jing Long, who graduated in 2015, to share his experiences in National Service.

Our former student, Mr. Tan Jing Long, explaining to a group of very attentive Secondary 2 students how the robotic dog works.

Mr Tan also brought another angle of the defence of Singapore into his presentation. He is currently a student at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Recently, he interned at the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA). He has been working closely with his colleagues, to learn about and improve the capabilities of Quad the Robotic Dog.

WRS comes up top at Design Track Hackathon by GreenSG

23 July – A group of five secondary 3 students have won first place in the Design Track Hackathon – Reduce Fashion Waste through Upcycling competition, organised by GreenSG, a registered charity for Sustainability in Singapore.

The competition was held as part of the IMPACT Festival 2022, which aims to bring young innovators, sustainability/social enterprises, educators, and start-up communities together to create a unique platform for Singapore heartland communities to take part, connect and learn.

The winning upcycled apparels designed by our student participants, made from recycled clothing and materials donated by fashion retailers.

Our self-directed students designed and fabricated fashion wear using recycled clothing/material donated by fashion retailers. They got the privilege to apply their knowledge and skills in fashion design at a workshop using fabrication tools and materials to support their works during the month-long project.

WRS SYFC clinches 4 awards in the Naval & Aviation Challenge 2022

21 July – WRS Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) won a total of 4 Performance Awards in the Naval & Aviation Challenge 2022, organised by School of Engineering, Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

The Naval & Aviation Challenge serves as an avenue for students to display their creativity, innovation and application of knowledge, in particular fluid dynamics and Bernoulli’s Principle. 8 schools with a total of 23 teams took part to vie for the Performance Award.

The 4 awards clinched by 6 teams in the Naval & Aviation Challenge 2022.

Out of 6 Performance Awards, WRS SYFC has won the Silver, Bronze, Merit and Highest score in speed awards.

Racial Harmony Week

18 – 22 July – Racial Harmony Day (RHD), observed on the 21st of July every year, is a day in Singapore to celebrate its success as a racially harmonious nation. At WRS, we celebrate racial harmony for an entire week.

The myriad of activities organized for the week aim to encourage racial harmony, appreciate cultural heritage, and celebrate diversity.

These included taking the pledge in the different Mother Tongues of Singapore and booths showcasing traditional food and games.

Student “vendors” educating their schoolmates on traditional food and encouraging them to get a taste of traditional Chinese dumplings.

A tea appreciation session led by Mr Fan Ruizhong, a Senior Chinese Language Teacher which allowed students to appreciate the art of Chinese tea.

On Racial Harmony Day itself, students and staff donned traditional costumes of various ethnic groups and nationalities. The school certainly became a more vibrant and colourful place of fun and meaningful learning.

25 July – The 16th Student Leaders Council Investiture marked the end of July, which saw the handover of the former Executive Committee (EXCO) to the current one.

The Handover Ceremony took place during the morning assembly. The school witnessed the solemn ceremony of former Chairperson, Chia Sin Hui to current Chairperson, Tanush Naidu.

Tanush then took members of the 16th Student Councillors Committee, including newly appointed CCA Student Leaders, in taking the Student Leaders pledge.

In the afternoon, the school celebrated the investiture of other leaders, namely CCA Leaders and Peer Support Leaders through a light-hearted video.

Form teachers then presented certificates of their appointment, marking the start of their new leadership journey.
